4 Features To Look For In Natural Makeup Products

Natural makeup can be expensive, but the benefits of using natural makeup on your skin make every penny worth it.

If you’re not sure what to look for when purchasing natural makeup products, or you want to know more about the ingredients in your skincare products, you’ve come to the right place.

The 4 Most Important Features:

Here at Fiera, we like to be transparent with our list of ingredients, so let’s take it a step further and clarify what each feature means.

  1. Paraben-Free: Parabens have been around for quite some time. Dating back to the 1920s, this chemical has been used as a preservative to extend the shelf life of many beauty products ranging everywhere from makeup, and haircare, to moisturizers and sunscreens. Preservatives are probably more commonly associated with food, considering the use of preservatives in food has increased throughout the years, and in tandem, the understanding of how bad preservatives are has also increased.

Parabens are a specific type of preservative that can mess with a person’s hormonal levels. While a little extra estrogen isn’t necessarily a bad thing, consistent absorption of parabens can lead to problems with a woman’s menstrual cycle, and/or put a woman at risk for breast cancer cell growth. Additionally, some people might have a visible allergic reaction to paraben products.

  • BHA & BHT Free: Similarly to parabens, butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) are chemical compounds meant to keep things fresh — food and makeup alike. Probably the biggest health concern regarding BHT & BHA is the toxic effect it can have on a person’s organs; including creating kidney, liver, and thyroid problems as it metabolizes over time.

These chemicals might not have a dramatic effect immediately, (unless it triggers an allergic reaction), but overtime having BHA & BHT in your makeup products can lead to some major health concerns. Don’t let these preservatives take an unnecessary toll on your health longevity.

  • Fragrance-Free: Everyone wants to smell good. There’s nothing bad about that. But fragrance does not necessarily have a positive place in makeup products. Fragrance free is not to be confused with “unscented,” because it can still have a certain type of smell, but does not include the harmful chemicals that fragrance products consist of. People with more sensitive skin types might be more susceptible to the negative side effects of fragrance products: commonly including the eczema condition dermatitis

  • Cruelty-Free: You may know that many makeup brands test on rabbits, guinea pigs, and mice. What you might not know is how poorly they treat these animals, both before and during the testing process, and thereafter. There’s a reason the phrase “cruelty free” is used to describe companies that do not accept these practices — it’s cruel.

At a first glance, getting cruelty free products might not necessarily seem like it would make a difference in your physical health, but mainstream makeup brands that test their products on animals do in fact use harsh chemicals — so you’re avoiding that right off the bat. Getting cruelty free makeup means protecting your skin, and making a difference in the future of the makeup industry.

Hopefully one day no makeup brand will include any of these harmful ingredients, or practices. But until that day, shop natural.

You shouldn’t have to look very hard when trying to find out if your makeup products are free of these things.
