Why It’s Important
Food insecurity and food inaccessibility are at an all-time high due to COVID-19. Many families are managing the loss of a job or even the loss of a loved one due to the pandemic. Some people in vulnerable communities may not even feel safe going to the grocery store.
Along with unemployment rates skyrocketing, the cost of living and food costs are growing as well. With children at home, there are a lot of families in North America who need help.
Before the pandemic, an estimated 35 million Americans experienced food insecurity. But since the start of the pandemic, that number has doubled. Many people who never thought they would have to deal with food insecurity are suddenly finding themselves in desperate straights.
That is why Fièra Cosmetics decided to partner with two fantastic organizations to take a stand against hunger: Food Rescue US and Second Harvest. These organizations redistribute uneaten food so that it ends up on the tables of the families who need it, not in a landfill.
This month, we can thank our partners at Food Rescue US for organizing and supplying all 117,180 meals to those in need.
Food Rescue US:
Food Rescue US addresses widespread hunger and food waste with the help of local volunteers in various major cities.
Their mission: “Food Rescue US is committed to reducing food waste and food insecurity in America. Using technology, we engage volunteers to transfer excess fresh food from grocers, restaurants, and other sources, to social service agencies that feed people who are food insecure.”
The nonprofit enlists the assistance of local food donors, social service agencies, and volunteers to reach the people who need them most. With additional programs such as their community kitchen, the restaurant meal program, and their farm distribution program, Food Rescue US is committed to fighting hunger and food waste nationwide.
Founded in 2011, the company has expanded significantly to the point where they have provided 58 million meals, preventing 76 million pounds of excess food from entering landfills.

Our Goal
As of February 2021, Fièra Cosmetics has donated 726,960 meals to those in need. That means we are well on our way to meeting our goal of feeding 2.5 million people in 2021.
